The Prism Club was offered at 15 out of 22 elementary schools in the ‘22-23 school year. The Club is offered at lunchtime. It is voluntary for students, and is only open to 4th and 5th graders (not TK-3rd). The principal communicates openly with parents and caregivers about clubs offered at the school, allowing parents and caregivers to “opt out” should they decide their student should not participate in the club. All parent “opt outs” are honored.

Some schools offer a number of clubs. For example, at Greenbrook in ‘22-23, lunchtime clubs included: No Place for Hate Club, Art Club, Prism Club and the Pokemon Club. Students could attend or go to recess instead to play.

The Prism Club’s goal is to provide a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and allies to create community. Students will play games to socialize, read books or watch videos with discussion aids for advisors, and make suggestions as to what they would like to do at future meetings. There is consistency across the district with suggested material and discussion questions. Prism Club advisors also meet regularly with each other and district staff to collaborate.
